Calculate the real workload
Prepare a one-week load record. Note each load type, outside dimensions, quantity, cycles per day and peak-day demand. Separate liquids, wrapped instruments, media, glassware and laboratory waste because they may need different cycles and loading arrangements.
- Measure the tallest flask, bottle, tray, bag or instrument pack.
- Record the diameter and height of baskets or carriers.
- Identify the peak workload rather than relying only on the average day.
- Allow space for steam circulation and follow the loading limits in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Match the cycle to the material
The required cycle depends on the load. Liquids generally need controlled heating and exhaust to reduce boil-over risk, while wrapped or porous loads may require effective air removal and drying. Waste cycles have their own handling and containment requirements.
- Confirm permitted temperature and pressure settings for each load type.
- Ask whether liquid, solid, waste, drying or programmable cycles are available when required.
- Do not assume that a cycle suitable for empty glassware is suitable for sealed or liquid containers.
- Use containers, closures and indicators compatible with the validated process.

A simple capacity decision method
Draw the internal chamber and the proposed basket to scale, then place the largest routine load inside it while maintaining the manufacturer’s clearances. Estimate cycles on the busiest day. If the proposed size causes excessive cycles or prevents correct loading, move to the next suitable configuration. If most cycles would be nearly empty, reassess whether a smaller chamber or different workflow is more efficient.

Is autoclave capacity measured by litres enough for selection?
No. Litre capacity does not show the chamber diameter, height, basket dimensions or door opening. Compare the actual load geometry with the usable chamber and carrier dimensions.
Can liquids and instruments use the same autoclave cycle?
Not necessarily. Liquids, solid instruments, porous loads and waste can require different air-removal, exhaust and drying behaviour. Confirm compatible cycles and validated procedures for each load.
Should an autoclave be filled completely?
Loads must be arranged to permit the required steam contact and circulation. Follow the manufacturer’s loading instructions and the validated procedure rather than filling all apparent free space.
