When a laminar airflow clean bench is appropriate
A clean bench can be suitable when the material is non-hazardous and the main objective is to protect the work from particles and contamination. The airflow direction and work layout must still be compatible with the process.

When a biosafety cabinet is required
Use a documented risk assessment to determine whether the work can generate infectious aerosols, splashes or exposure to hazardous biological material. Cabinet class and exhaust configuration must match the hazard, procedure, facility and applicable institutional rules.
